By definition, a status symbol is the is a perceived visible, external denotation of one's social position and perceived indicator of economic or social status. Status symbol is like an exclusive membership to the hottest thing going on town, only a select few has the access for it, those who have the money... the upper classes. Mainly, status symbol may vary depending on the class of society a person belongs to or wants to be associated with. Having a status symbol only becomes an issue because of the social climbers and discrimination. People, usually the middle class, tend to imitate those who belong in the upper class of society to create a distinction between them and the lower class. In so doing, discrimination may take place and social climbing may arise for those who are eager to be unique and identified as a socialite. One common status symbol is having a car. Everyone wants to own one and not often because of its primary function but because of status symbol. There is a certain pride and confidence that goes with owning a car, especially expensive brands. One common example of status symbol is on a college setting. There is a group of rich male students with all the luxury they can get like cars, gadgets, good looks, confidence and usually the girls. Most will look up to them as coolest guys in the campus. Girls will admire them, and other guys either hate them or aspire to be like them some day. In this scenario, two social status exists – one is rich or the upper class people who have all the luxury in the world, and the other is the middle class or the lower ranking ones. Status symbols like money, gadgets, confidence and the attention of girls is are considered to be the status symbols that everyone aspires to have. Status symbol usually consists of expensive gadgets, materials, signature outfits and more. It is sad to know that mass media has its hand on even pushing the notion of owning a status symbol, that white girls are beautiful than dark girls, that having this cellular phone makes you in, that the answer to true beauty is patronizing this expensive product. But besides all of these expensive nuisances, what one should first consider is the relevance of such items in his everyday life. Is it more of a necessity rather than just a mere wants? What's the use of having a status symbol when you can't even fix your foul attitude, or people's negative impression of you?
